FINAL DRIVE RATIO - Ural
THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY VANCE BLOSSER AND PUBLISHED HERE WITH HIS PERMISSION.
Question: How can you tell what the final drive ratio is on a Ural? Are there any markings or part numbers on the Final Drive housing that would let you know?
Answer: Externally you can't tell - the housings are identical for both ratios. However, there IS a simple way to find out.
Put the bike up on the center stand. Put it in neutral. Turn the back wheel so the valve stem is at the bottom. Rotate the wheel 1 time and count how many times the driveshaft turns - it will either turn less than 4 times (3.89 ratio) or it will turn a bit over 4 1/2 times (4.62 ratio).
It helps if you have a friend help with the process, as it's easy to get distracted if you aren't careful, trying to watch 2 items at the same time.
