Changing the Oil

This article was written by Vance Blosser and is posted here with his permission.

=========================================================

Engine

The dipstick hole is used to fill the engine and the drain plug is on the bottom of the engine.

The oil filter is located at the front of the engine. On the bottom of the front cover (where the spark plug wires come out) there is a 'disk' with a huge 22 mm nut on it. Unscrew the disk and some oil will come out, and eventually the disk comes out. The filter sits on top of the disk.

NOTE: there is a little rubber adapter that sits on the nipple of the disk (or it may be in the old filter hole). You need this for the new filter.

Here's the whole procedure:

Drive the bike a bit to stir up any dirt etc. in the oil.

Park the bike. Put a pan under the engine to catch the oil. Remove the drain plug. After it finishes draining replace the plug and snug it up good.

Move your oil catch pan forward and remove the filter disk. BE CAREFUL to not burn yourself on the exhaust pipes or the hot oil.

Remove the old filter from the disk, keeping the 'top hat'.

Pour some fresh oil inside the new filter and roll it around to saturate the paper. Place the filter on the disk and screw that back into the engine casing. Snug it up tight.

Refill the engine through the dipstick hole with the correct amount of fresh 20-50 wt oil. It will read high now because the oil filter area is still empty.

Start the engine and run it for a few minutes - be careful not to forget that it's air-cooled and let it overheat!

Check the dipstick to verify it has enough oil.

Transmission

This is also a good time to change the transmission oil, as the shearing action of the gears is hard on the oil too. The transmission takes the same type of oil as the engine. The drain plug is the same size as the engine drain plug except it's on the transmission, further back. You fill it through the 19mm hole below the starter.

Final Drive

The final drive requires 100-110 cc of 85-90 wt gear oil. It≠s a good idea to drain and refill the final drive at oil change time just to be sure.
